阿彌陀佛,我是恆禪,今天和大家結法緣。 今天是(農曆)9月初八,1010日。 (農曆)919日是觀世音菩薩的出家紀念日,所以就和大家分享觀音菩薩修行,以及祖師出家三十法則,來和大家學習以增進及兼顧我們的道心及返本還源。

Today is the 8th day of the 9th month (on Lunar calendar). The 19th day of the 9th month is the commemoration day of Guanyin Bodhisattvas entering the monastic life.  So I would like to share Guanyin Bodhisattva’s practices and the 30 essential guidelines for monastics from the Patriarch, so that we can learn together to increase and solidify and make firm our aspiration for the Way, so we can return to our origin.

為什麼我們要念觀世音菩薩的名號呢?要打觀音七,念觀音名號,還有禪坐修行,迴光返照? 因為觀世音菩薩是有求必應,誰求他,他就答應誰。 觀世音菩薩這幾個字,觀是一種觀智,能觀的智慧,世音是所觀的境界。 能觀的智慧,所觀的境界,就是觀世間所有一切的境界,所有一切的音聲。 這個音聲有苦聲、樂聲、善聲、惡聲、有好聲、壞聲。 觀世音菩薩看世界種種的音聲,他就隨心滿願,所有的眾生無論求什麼,向觀世音菩薩祈求,那麼觀世音菩薩一定就令他遂心滿願。

So why do we recite, or why do we want to be mindful of Guanyin Bodhisattva? Why do we come to participate in the Guanyin session? Why do we engage in Chan meditation, or even return the light to reflect within? The reason why we are mindful of Guanyin Bodhisattva is because he will respond to every single request in your heart. Whoever seeks his help, whoever he will respond to. So Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva, these few characters, Guan means to contemplate. It is the wisdom of contemplation. This is the wisdom that’s capable of contemplation. Shi Yin means the sound of the world. That is the state that we are contemplating, we are observing. So it is the wisdom that can contemplate, to contemplate or observe the state that we are contemplating. Basically, it’s contemplating all the states in the world. All the voices, the sound, sound of suffering, sound of bliss, wholesome sound, evil sound, good sound, bad sounds. So Guanyin Bodhisattva would contemplate all kinds of sounds, all kinds of voices, then he will fulfill your wish. Whatever living beings seek, when you ask Guanyin Bodhisattva for aid, then Guanyin Bodhisattva will certainly fulfill your wishes.

我們拿一個例子來說,宣化上人在東北的時候,他帶著一些小孩子們去有疫情的地方念大悲咒,很誠心的念,結果疫情全都消滅了。 為什麼呢?因為宣化上人說,因為我不打妄想,所以念大悲咒的時候,令到事情就感應了。 所以觀音菩薩的法門沒有別的,就是誠心,沒有妄想。 宣公上人也加了一點,他說因為他也守著六大宗旨,所以就會有感應。

沒有妄想,主要就是沒有煩惱。 我們出家,今天是我們大家出家,最主要就是要出煩惱之家。 所以現在跟大家分享祖師訓誨出家的三十要則。 要是我們跟著這三十個要則去修的話,我們必定能夠出煩惱之家。 出煩惱之家,自然就沒有妄想,也能夠達到觀音菩薩和宣公上人的清淨修行法。

Next, I want to share with you a story by the Venerable Master. In northeast China, when he was there, he took some children to a place where a pandemic or plague had occurred, and he would have them recite the Great Compassion Mantra.

Eventually, the plagues were gone. Why was it so efficacious? Because the Venerable Master said, “I don’t have any false thoughts. I don’t strike up any false thoughts. So when I recite the Great Compassion Mantra, it is efficacious and brings a response.” The Venerable Master also talked about how if we follow and adhere to the Six Great Principles, then the mantra, when recited, will also be efficacious. Without delusions, mainly, there is no trouble.

Today, for monastics as we are, the most important thing is to get rid of the house of afflictions. So now I would like to share with you the 30 principles for monastics by the patriarchs. If we follow these 30 principles in our practice, then we will definitely leave the house of afflictions.

Because when we leave the home life, we are leaving the home of afflictions. So I would like to share the 30 essential guidelines by the patriarchs that give us some directions in how to practice. If we can follow these 30 essential guidelines, then we will certainly leave the home of afflictions. By leaving the home of afflictions, naturally, there will be no more delusions, and one will be able to achieve the pure practice Dharma of Guanyin Bodhisattva and Venerable Master Hua.

1.出家要真參禪,參透未生以前;一日凡軀脫落,靈光普蔭人天。

    Entering the monastic life, One Must Truly Cultivate Chan. Penetrate the chan topic: who was I before birth? One day, the mundane self will shed, and spiritual light will shine on humans and heavens.

2.出家要勤念佛,念念要生彼國;念到不念而念,彌陀不從他得。

    Entering the monastic life, One Must Be Mindful of the Buddha’s Name
    Each thought must strive to be reborn in that Land;
    Recite mindfully to a point as if not reciting, Then Amitabha is not attained through another’s hand.   

3.出家要虔禮佛,消盡平生罪業;趙州二王供養,便是這個法則。

 Entering the monastic life, One Must Respectfully Bow to the Buddha
 Eliminating all karmic debts accumulated through life;
 The offerings to Monk Zhao Zhou from the two Kings,
 This is the true principle of practice.

二王是指當時的燕王和趙王 ,因為他們有一個問題,問了什麼?是法王尊貴還是人王尊貴 ?結果趙州說,法王跟人王都是同樣尊貴的 因為人王有自性佛,法王就是已經成佛的佛。 所以趙州王和燕王就不打仗了, 兩位和合,就皈依了趙州和尚 所以罪業就消除了。

The two kings made offerings to Monk Zhaozhou, and this demonstrates the true principle of practice. So what does it mean that the two kings made offerings to Monk Zhaozhou? This refers to the king of the state of Yan and the king of the state of Zhao. Both were on the brink of war, and one day they asked Monk Zhaozhou which one was more honorable: the king of humans or the king of Dharma? Monk Zhaozhou replied that they are both equal.

Why? Because the king of humans has the Buddha nature inherent in our nature, and will eventually become a Buddha. The king of Dharma is already a Buddha, having realized Buddhahood. Since both kings have the Buddha nature, they found this answer satisfactory, decided to stop the war, and took refuge with Monk Zhaozhou and their karmic offenses were eradicated.

4.出家要持戒行,戒是佛祖正令;受戒不守毗尼,徒勞喪身失命。

Entering the monastic life, One Must Uphold the Precepts
The precepts are the Buddha’s rightful command;
To receive the precepts but not keep the Vinaya,
Is to toil in vain, losing both life and spirit.

5.出家要常念經,惟誠報答四恩;信口念出四字,自成大藏全文。

Entering the monastic life, One Must Often Recite Sutras
With sincerity to repay the four kindnesses;
Reciting even a single character with faith,
Forms the complete teachings of the Tripitaka.

6.出家要去聽教,不然開口亂道;胸中半字不留,佛祖開顏含笑。
  Entering the monastic life, One Must Seek to Listen to the Teachings
  Otherwise, speaking carelessly leads to chaos;
  With no word left unexamined,
  The Buddha smiles with joy.

7.出家要敬師長,隨力隨時供養;百孝不如一順,不可回頭倔強。

Entering the monastic life, One Must Respect Teachers and Elders
Offerings according to one’s ability and timing;
A hundred acts of filiality cannot match a single act of respect and obedience,
Do not turn back to stubbornness.

8.出家要學老成,第一不可誇能;猖狂硬氣粗疏,神人一見生瞋。

Entering the monastic life, One Must Learn True Sincerity and to Be Mature
Above all, do not boast of your abilities;
Arrogance and coarse demeanor,
Will provoke anger in wise beings at first sight.

9.出家要教徒弟,不可隨他遊戲;諄諄教養成人,好作佛門大器。

  Entering the monastic life, One Must Teach Disciples           
  Do not follow and indulge in their games;
  Gently nurture them into talents,
  To become great vessels of the Buddha’s teachings.

10.出家要除懶惰,凡事向前去做;你若避懶偷安,人神哪得衛護。

    Entering the monastic life, One Must Eliminate Laziness
    Actively engage in every task;
    If you avoid effort and seek comfort,
    Neither humans nor gods can protect you.

11.出家要學定力,直把私心盡絕;單單提個話頭,自然萬緣俱息。

   Entering the monastic life, One Must Cultivate Samadhi
    Completely put and end to selfish desires;
    Only focusing on the Chan topic,
    Naturally, all distracting conditions will cease.

12.出家要近善人,死心蹋地相親;學些好樣在肚,自然脫俗離塵。     

  Entering the monastic life, One Must Associate with Good spiritual friends
  Wholeheartedly connect with those who are wholesome;
  Learn from their good examples,
  And you will naturally detach from the mundane.

13.出家要離惡友,一惡般般出醜; 王法不怕惡人,惡人披枷帶杻。

  Entering the monastic life, One Must Distance from Evil Friends
  Evil friends will lead you to disgrace in every way;
  The laws of the land do not fear the malicious,
  Yet the malicious bear the weight of their chains.

14.出家要輕財物,不可千方百計;一口氣若不來,一文拿他不去。

   Entering the monastic life, One Must Value Wealth Lightly
   Do not scheme or plot over material gain;
   If breath should falter,
   Not a single coin can be taken.

15.
出家要甘淡泊,自古三不足;莫嫌淡飯黃虀,古人纓絡炊粥。

  Entering the monastic life, One Must Embrace Simplicity
  Since ancient times, people never had enough from the three meals.
  Do not resent plain meals or simple fare,
  For ancient sages cook their humble porridge – scanty rice with strings of wild greens.

16.出家要斷煩惱,一了千百俱了;終朝煩煩惱惱,驢年哪得悟道。

   Entering the monastic life, One Must Cut Off Afflictions
   Once the root is severed, countless troubles fade;
   To dwell in worries day after day,
   How can one hope to awaken to the Way?

17.出家要明因果,粒粒施主辛苦;吃了若不修行,做牛做馬還補。

   Entering the monastic life, One Must Understand Cause and Effect
   Every grain is a result of the donor’s toil;
   If one eats without practice,
  They will repay as beasts of burden.

18.出家要和大眾,慎勿互相爭鬨;聚頭說是說非,空把光陰來送。

   Entering the monastic life, One Must Harmonize with the Community
  Avoid mutual disputes and quarrels;
  Gathering to gossip leads only to waste,
  Time passes with no benefit.

19.出家要吃些虧,又要帶三分呆;心似寒灰枯木,是非從何處來。

   Entering the monastic life, One Must Endure Some Losses
   One must also carry a measure of foolishness;
   If the heart is likened cold ashes and withered trees,
   Where will disputes arise?

20.出家要常知足,莫管衣衫淡泊;若想他人財物,不顧自己福薄。

   Entering the monastic life, One Must Always Know Contentment
   Do not concern yourself with clothing and simple fare;
   If you covet others’ wealth,
   You will overlook your own scanty blessings.

21.出家要顧常住,一針一草勿棄;隨心恣意侵損,伽藍與你算計。

  Entering the monastic life, One Must Care for the Monastic Community
  Do not abandon even a needle or a blade of grass;
  If you act with impunity,
  The Sangaranma will account for your actions.

22.出家要趁少年,諸般要去向前;當此膂力強健,耕轉祖業田園。

  Entering the monastic life, One Must Seize Youthful Opportunities
  Strive to move forward in all matters;
  While strength is still robust,
  Tend to the passed down farms, gardens and lands.

23.
出家要起得早,遲了修行不了;明朝又有明朝,明朝壽命難保。

Entering the monastic life, One Must Rise Early
Delays in practice will yield no results;
Tomorrow will surely come,
Yet tomorrow’s lifespan is never guaranteed.

24.出家要口謹默,不可多嘴饒舌;若然惹是招非,地獄少你不得。

Entering the monastic life, One Must Speak Mindfully

Do not be loquacious or verbose;
If you invite trouble with your words,
You may find yourself in hell.

    25.出家要立主意,務使頓明心地;妄為顛倒攀緣,阿鼻誰人可替。

      If you invite trouble with your words,
      You may find yourself in hell.

    26.出家要忍人辱,忍辱天下和睦;此章佛祖真傳,忍辱少罪多福。

    Entering the monastic life, One Must Endure Humiliation
    Being patient with slander brings peace to the world;
    This chapter is a true transmission from the Buddha,
    For being patient with humiliation eradicate offenses and brings abundant blessings.

    27.出家要遠俗家,俗家人事如麻;杜絕塵緣煩擾,自然別有生涯。

    Entering the monastic life, One Must Stay Away from the Worldly
    Mundane affairs are as tangled as weeds;
    Sever attachments and disturbances,
    And you will naturally discover another path.

    28.出家要斷妄心,妄心好事難成;若依妄心行事,必有禍患臨身。

    Entering the monastic life, One Must Sever Illusory Thoughts
    Illusory thoughts make it hard to achieve good;
    If you act according to these thoughts,
    Disasters will surely come.


    29.
    出家要達道理,切切只盡自己;謙和每讓三分,相見人人歡喜。

    Entering the monastic life, One Must Comprehend the Truth
    Always strive to do your best;
    Be humble and allow others to shine,
    So all may rejoice in each other’s presence.

    30.出家要信佛法,三藏一口吞卻;方知源遠流長,可接佛祖一脈。

      Entering the monastic life, One Must Have Faith in the Buddha’s Teachings
      Consume the Tripitaka with one mouthful;
      Only then will you know the deep and far-reaching source,
      Connecting you to the Buddha’s lineage.
